Cleaning Your Windows: Let in the Fall Light

Windows can accumulate a surprising amount of dirt, dust, and streaks over the summer months, especially from pollen and outdoor debris. October is the perfect time to tackle this task, as the cooler weather makes it easier to clean without the sun causing streaks on the glass.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for getting your windows sparkling clean:

Step 1: Dust and Prep the Window Area

Before you even think about spraying a cleaning solution on the glass, make sure the area is dust-free. Dust the window frames, sills, and any surrounding ledges using a microfiber cloth or a vacuum with a brush attachment. This prevents dirt from mixing with the cleaner and turning into a muddy mess. Pay extra attention to the corners and any areas where dirt and cobwebs tend to accumulate.

Step 2: Choose the Right Cleaning Solution

There are a few options for cleaning your windows. One of the most effective and eco-friendly solutions is a mixture of vinegar and water:

  • DIY Vinegar Solution: Mix one part distilled white vinegar with two parts water in a spray bottle. For particularly dirty windows, you can add a drop of dish soap to help break down grease.

If you prefer a store-bought cleaner, opt for a streak-free glass cleaner such as Windex or Sprayway, which are both known for leaving a clear, polished finish.

Step 3: Clean the Glass Like a Pro

To avoid streaks, it’s important to use the right technique and materials. Microfiber cloths are ideal because they’re absorbent and won’t leave lint behind.

  1. Spray the Solution: Start by spraying the solution directly onto the windowpane. If you’re cleaning both the inside and outside of the window, it’s helpful to clean one side using horizontal strokes and the other side using vertical strokes. This makes it easier to identify which side any remaining streaks are on.

  2. Wipe the Glass: Using a microfiber cloth or newspaper, wipe the window in a Z-shaped motion, working from top to bottom. This method ensures even coverage and helps prevent streaks.

  3. Polish with a Dry Cloth: Once the window is clean, use a dry microfiber cloth to go over the glass, polishing away any remaining streaks or water spots.

For windows that are extremely dirty, such as those exposed to heavy outdoor elements, you may need to use a squeegeefor an extra streak-free shine. To do this, dip the squeegee into a bucket of soapy water, run it across the window starting at the top, and wipe the blade clean between strokes. Finish by drying the edges of the window with a clean, dry cloth.

Step 4: Don’t Forget the Window Tracks

Window tracks tend to collect dust, dirt, and even dead bugs, especially over the warmer months. For a deep clean, use a small brush (like an old toothbrush) to loosen dirt. You can also vacuum out loose debris.

  1. Scrub with a Brush: Dip the toothbrush into a solution of warm, soapy water or vinegar and use it to scrub the tracks.

  2. Wipe Clean: Once the dirt is loosened, use a damp cloth to wipe the tracks clean, then dry them with a clean towel to prevent mildew from forming.
